Kegs for Kids raises over $40,000 to benefit Peirce School; funding for science lab announced
ANDERSONVILLE NEIGHBORHOOD (CHICAGO) – Kegs for Kids, the second annual craft beer tasting party to benefit Helen C. Peirce Elementary school, successfully brewed up about $40,000 in tickets sales and auction earnings.

During the event, held October 8, 2011 at Loyola University’s Mundelein Auditorium, State Senator Heather Steans, State Representative Kelly Cassidy and 48th Ward Alderman Harry Osterman announced $75,000 slated for a science lab at the school.

“I am thrilled to announce at least $75,000 in the State’s capital plan available for the much needed science lab at Peirce,” Steans said. “The Peirce community has worked diligently to restore this room as a science lab, and I am convinced great learning will occur in the new space when it is completed.”
Peirce Principal Nancy Mendez explained that the science laboratory will provide boundless opportunities to Peirce students, allowing them to reach new academic heights in inquiry-based learning through exploration and real-world application.

“The fundraising from Kegs for Kids will be utilized to increase technology at Peirce School. This  will allow our students to continue to strengthen their knowledge and skills in connecting to the digital world, making them global inquirers and problem solvers,” Mendez said. “Peirce Elementary is grateful for the strong support of the parents, teachers, and community in bringing forth exciting learning opportunities for our students. Peirce is in an upward trajectory and we will continue to work hard to maintain this momentum.”

The event featured unlimited beer tasting from 60 breweries across the country, wine, food from local restaurants, a special roast from Metropolis Coffee (available only at the event), and a silent auction with items ranging from accommodations in Steamboat Springs, Colorado and a dinner with Alpana Singh of Check Please to concert tickets and gift certificates for area restaurants and boutiques.

Friends of Peirce, a 501(c)(3), is made up of dedicated parents, merchants and residents who are passionate about improving the neighborhood school, Helen C. Peirce Elementary School, which educates pre-K thru 8th grade students at 1423 W. Bryn Mawr Avenue in Chicago.
